Comments:
Can a porter be called “spectacular”? That was my first thought after finishing up a Bell’s Porter recently. It’s without question a solid beer: it pours a dark chocolate with a modest, thick-bubbled, mocha-colored head, and the aroma is a perfect complement, with notes of roasted coffee, chocolate and malt.

The taste is that hearty, full-bodied mouthful of toasted coffee you’ve come to expect from a porter adhering to the classic version of the style: thick and chewy, with loads of malt character that sticks around for a while after each sip. Although Bell’s doesn’t spill the beans, I’m guessing they’re brewing with an ale yeast, unlike those folks that brew the new-fangled, watered-down lager porters (yeah, I’m talking to you, SKA Brewing).

So, a good, solid beer. But spectacular? Kind of like calling a game of horsehoes “spectacular.” But highly drinkable? Damn straight.
