I never expect much from Mexican beers, as most of them are full of corn adjunct, often light struck and/or chock full of DMS, and usually just plain crappy unless you shove a lime into the neck of the bottle.

So with low expectations, I sampled a Carta Blanca recently. It belongs to the gi-normous Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma Brewery, which is owned by Heineken and includes brands such as Sol, Tecate, Dos Equis (with the fantastic “most interesting” ad campaign), and others.

Carte Blana takes its name from the French “carte blanche” and is one of their original premium lagers. For a long time, it was sold only in Mexico and is more recently available in the States.

It pours pale yellow, with a large bubbly head that dissipates quickly. There’s a soft green bean aroma, hints of DMS, but not as bad as I would’ve expected. A corn adjunct lager, no doubt, it has a mildly sweet body and a soft dry finish.

This actually isn’t so bad … even without the lime … and it can be categorized as “drinkable.” In fact, it might actually be pretty thirst-quenching on a hot, summer day.
