I love it when brewpubs are able to start bottling their beer and selling it at retail because that means they’re doing well and more people will be exposed to craft beer. Flossmoor Station, a place that’s on my list to visit in person, is the latest Illinois brewery to start bottling selected beers for sale in a couple of locations.

When I heard this news, I hightailed it to one of the few places it’s being sold and got this bottle of American Wheat Ale. I chilled it, and recently popped it open, hoping to savor a great beer.

What I got was a pretty decent beer. The bottle promised 45 percent wheat, a dab of honey malt for color, and Amarillo hops. In reality, the color was gorgeous—a deep gold with an amber-reddish hue that I didn’t expect. A medium-sized head gave way to a brew that smelled sweet and thick. So far, it was promising.

The taste, however, was a little more watery than I thought it would be, especially at the front end of the sip. It quickly slid down my throat, and then my mouth was slammed with a pretty big and bold flavor (hey, you can’t mess with those Texas hops). I really enjoyed this big mouthfeel, but I was slightly disappointed on the watery part.

I let the beer open up a bit, hoping that would solve some of the split flavors, but that didn’t work. Once it was a bit warmer, it tasted a bit hoppy and bitter for my liking and was more sour than it was sweet.

Overall though, when chilled, it was not a bad choice. Even though it wasn’t quite the wheat ale experience I’d hoped for, it was still quite a flavorful beer, and it bodes well for more good things from this tiny brewpub.

It's Bud Light so doesn't really matter, but we expect this beer to be sitting around for awhile.
